After a sold-out run Off-Broadway at The Public Theater last fall, Danai Gurira’s critically-acclaimed play "Eclipsed" (starring Lupita Nyong’o) opened on Broadway just last night (March 6) at the Golden Theater. But the playwright and actress ("The Walking Dead," "Mother of George") is also shepherding the run of her next play, Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, titled "Familiar," which also just opened (March 3).

She’s certainly going to be active during the next few weeks. Meanwhile "The Walking Dead" recently returned for the second half of the season on February 14.

This is the New York premiere for "Familiar," which is written by Gurira and directed by Rebecca Taichman, with a cast that includes Ito Aghayere, Joby Earle, Melanie Nicholls-King, Roslyn Ruff, Harold Surratt, Myra Lucretia Taylor, Joe Tippett, and Tony Award winner Tamara Tunie.

The synopsis for "Familiar" reads: It’s winter in Minnesota, and a Zimbabwean family is preparing for the wedding of their eldest daughter, a first-generation American. But when the bride insists on observing a traditional African custom, it opens a deep rift in the household. Rowdy and affectionate, "Familiar" pitches tradition against assimilation, drawing a loving portrait of a family: the customs they keep, and the secrets they bury.

The production features scenic design by Clint Ramos, costume design by Tony Award winner Susan Hilferty, lighting design by Tyler Micoleau, and sound design by Tony Award winner Darron L. West.
