Set in Lagos, the series will explore “deep themes of class, innocence and challenging the status quo.”
Jennifer Lee, Chief Creative Officer, said she noticed Kugali (founded by Fikayo Adeola, Hamid Ibrahim and Tolu Olowofoyeku) after reading an article about a Pan-African comic book that wanted to “kick Disney in the arse.”
She explained, “I was intrigued. Here was three talented comic book artists. Their dream was to bring African stories created by an African artist to the world, highlighting the diversity of cultures, histories, and voices across the continent. Their talents as storytellers blew us away. I’m proud to announce the first of its kind collaboration to bring original long for series to Disney+.”
Aside from these two series, Disney Animation also has the following set at the streamer: Baymax, Zootopia and Moana.
