The Waterfront series creator Kevin Williamson has said goodbye to the Buckleys after Netflix decided not to renew the show for a second season. According to Deadline, the Scream franchise screenwriter penned a lengthy message with a picture from the show that included star Holt McCallany and guest star Topher Grace on his Instagram Stories.

Here’s what he said as well as more on the show’s cancellation.

Williamson remembers the ‘joy’ of making the show

In the message, Williamson reflected on the “joy” of making the show, which follows a powerful North Carolina family (the Buckleys) as their fishing business empire enters “treacherous waters.”

“While I’m sad the Buckleys won’t be back for a season 2, I’m celebrating the joy that was Season 1,” he wrote.

He went on to thank fans for watching The Waterfront and his “dream cast and crew,” who worked on the family crime drama in North Carolina and Los Angeles. Williamson also shouted out his “partners” at the studio behind the show, Universal Television.

“And thank you to Netflix for taking a chance on a very personal story,” Williamson added. “You were truly a joy to work with! It was one of the best experiences of my life!”

Williamson has been candid before about how his own childhood and family inspired The Waterfront, particularly his father, who the show creator told Netflix’s Tudum “got tempted to do some things that weren’t so legal and got him in some trouble.”

Williamson was already planning plot lines for Season 2

After the show’s Season 1 finale, Williamson told TV Line he already had a few ideas for another season. He teased shifts in relationships, especially between Harlan (McCallany) and Cane (Jake Weary) after the latter killed Grace’s Grady. Williamson said a new season would likely follow the father-son duo as they experience “more stumbling … before they fully repair that relationship.”

As for Belle Buckley (Maria Bello), Williamson planned to explore the implications of her taking the crown.

“Belle has always taken her place, puppeting Harlan and controlling what happens to the Buckley family behind the scenes,” Williamson said. “All of her little shenanigans have been done behind Harlan, and in the shadows of Harlan, and now she’s ready to shove him out of the way, stand front and center, and really take the reins.”

The Waterfront released on June 19 and spent five weeks in Netflix’s global Top 10 for English-language shows. It garnered 11.6 million views during its first full week on the streaming platform, Deadline reported.
