Quad Webb has been a standout on Married to Medicine since its premiere 11 seasons ago. Initially perceived as the underdog due to her ties with the show’s creator, Mariah Huq, Webb quickly won over fans with her wit and charisma. Viewers have watched her transition from a dissatisfied housewife to an independent woman who defied expectations by divorcing Dr. Gregory Lunceford, despite advice to the contrary. This pivotal decision marked a turning point in her role on the show as she fought for independence and respect.
Now, Webb is thriving as a central cast member. This season, she introduces her new partner, King, while rebuilding friendships and navigating group dynamics. Last season, many anticipated drama with the return of her ex-husband, Dr. G, and his new wife. Instead, Webb maintained her composure and focused on her own happiness. In an interview with Blavity’s Shadow and Act, she shared what fans can expect this season, addressed personal rumors, and discussed her evolving perspective on motherhood.
Contessa returns this season. How are you feeling about her comeback after her one-season hiatus?
I always love seeing Contessa, so to see her return back to the show was a pleasure for me.
Now, how is your relationship with Phaedra? How is that going to unravel in the season? I saw some press recently where you and Heavenly spoke about some of the behind-the-scenes drama that played out. Obviously, you can’t dish too much because we’re hopefully going to see it play out on the show. But what can you tease about that?
Well, I think the unraveling of me and Phaedra’s relationship began last season, basically when she turned her back on me in Napa. She switched her airline ticket, and so that was a huge disappointment for me without her even telling me that she did that. That was the beginning. Then to have it confirmed that she orchestrated a meeting leading the charge to try to get me fired was very disheartening. And so, as you can imagine, there is little to no relationship there with Phaedra and I currently.
Why do you think not only did she jump ship, but went so far as trying to get you off the show? That seems a little deep.
I think she probably thought that it was an opportunity for her to take over Married to Medicine. I think at the time, she did not have the opportunities that we’ve seen her share with the world like The Traitors and Dancing With the Stars. And I think at that moment, the only thing she did have in terms of entertainment value was Married to Medicine, and she thought that if she could get me out of the way, then she would be able to, I guess, be the lead or be one of the leads of the show. And that’s the only concept of thinking that I can come up with. Even in that, that still doesn’t prove her to be a good friend, because a good friend wouldn’t do that. You don’t do that type of thing.
Now, speaking of the many mistakes or the many transgressions of last season, we were introduced to Sweet Tea, your ex-husband’s new wife. And you spoke with us last season and let us know that you didn’t have any problems with her. It seemed for the most part that that was mutual. Where would you say that the two of you stand this season, and do you feel as if Sweet Tea learned a lot from the way that she entered into the fold to now?
Well, I would say this: I think last year and this year is completely different between Sweet Tea and I, and it’s primarily on her behalf. I really don’t say anything about her nor to her. However, in every episode this season, season 11, she has taken to her YouTube and has used it as a Quad bashing session. Now for me, I would never be a newlywed and claim that I’m in love and I have all of this bliss for my marriage and my husband, but I’m spending time talking about his ex-wife. That seems a bit weird to me. And in the beginning, she was very much so happy to meet me. If we go back to the time where I was actually invited by Phaedra to come to her bachelorette party, she said when I came in, “Sit by me, Quad, sit by me!” Very enthusiastically. She was happy about me being present. It wasn’t until Toya put pressure on her for her to change her behavior and attitude towards me and asked me to leave, and of course, I obliged. I came bearing gifts. I was happy to be able to celebrate her. There was no animosity on my side. This season is completely different. She is using her time to be in this imaginary battle with me because she’s really just fighting against herself.
How do you feel about the way that Toya has handled the Sweet Tea situation? Regardless of whether you guys are the best of friends or not, you have been on the show with each other since the show’s inception.
Well, listen, like I said, you have to kind of just think about where everything was last season. Everybody thought that it was a great idea to bring Sweet Tea on for one reason and one reason only: that was to use her to get under my skin. They were using her to weaponize her against me, thinking that she was supposed to break me. Everyone wanted to see, “How is Quad going to respond with Doctor G’s new wife being on the show? That’s gonna be the gotcha gotcha. We finally have an opportunity to get Quad.” We’re gonna get her good, and it fell flat. It did not work.
It was very underwhelming, and now there’s nothing more to go on with that. And so, I think this is one of the reasons why she’s spending so much time talking about me on her YouTube because she’s scratching to survive to stay on the show. I’m really not interested in having that back-and-forth with her. I’m really not.
Well, one of the reasons we adore you is because you do remain unbothered, and you’re way more unbothered this season because you introduced your man on the show. So what made you ready to take that step after we’ve seen you married, divorced, and kind of really take your time in the dating space on the show with bringing somebody on? Why was this the right time for you to introduce your new, your new view?
Well, for me, it was never about the fans. It’s never about television. It’s truly about what’s going on in my real life. It was the natural progression for King and me. We had been together for over one year, and now at a year and seven months, closely approaching two years, we have never spent much time apart from each other. So it wasn’t like, because we’re about to start filming and the job is gonna call for me to be here and there and taping, I was not going to hide him. I felt like I took the necessary time to get to know him.
We laid down the foundation for our relationship. We have a close-knit bond, and it was just time. I do not understand some of my cast members like, “Well, she didn’t tell us she had a man.” Well, it wasn’t for me to tell them. It was for me to make sure that this man was in my corner for the right reasons, that he was going to give me the love, support, care, and nurturing that I deserve, that he was going to be unselfish and not here to possibly gain something. And once I felt comfortable with that, it was a no-brainer, and he was comfortable with coming on camera. It was an easy decision to make.
Now from the trailer and from some of the stuff that Dr. Heavenly has told me in our previous interview, it seems as if he ruffled some feathers.
Sometimes people think like people are all good when you’re in the hot seat. They want to see how are you gonna respond, “Oh, this is good,” when they feel like they have the upper hand, but when the tables are turned, they’re not able to handle it with so much grace. You understand what I’m saying? So basically, when my ex-husband thought, “Oh, you know, I’m gonna tear Quad down with this, and I’m gonna bring my new wife on the show, and I’m gonna rub this in her face….” It really wasn’t rubbing anything in my face. In fact, when I learned that they were engaged, I gave them a compliment, and I said, “I wish them well.” I am paraphrasing, but it’s been six years post-divorce now. There is love after divorce, and I was able to take it pretty well. It was never a challenge for me. I want everyone to understand that. Sweet Tea has never been my issue. It’s just the issues that I have with my ex-husband and things that were going on and transpiring in our marriage that made it difficult for me to deal with my ex-husband being back on the show. But even in that, I handled it with grace.
You go back to the Med Gala. When I saw him, I was respectful to Tea and asked her, “Can I hug your husband’s neck?” That was me being gracious. That was me saying, “You no longer have control over me, my emotions, and how I handle certain situations.” That was me claiming freedom at that moment. However, now that my ex-husband sees that I’m happy in a relationship and my life is going well and my man is handsome, successful, and we have a really good interaction together, he couldn’t handle that. He really couldn’t handle it, and he became emotionally unhinged and lashed out. And you guys will see what happens next after the disrespect that he showed for me.
Were you surprised by his emotional volatility? You had mentioned in the past that there had been some issues in your marriage, at least when the divorce was unraveling. During one reunion, you mentioned there had been some type of verbal and physical altercation on his end with you. So were you surprised by that, or were you just disappointed?
I was a bit shocked because, first and foremost, you have a new wife. Nothing that I do should evoke this type of emotion from him. If he’s truly made peace with the divorce and he doesn’t care for me anymore, he should have been able to handle the situation in a better way. I handled it. So I was shocked to hear the emotional outburst. I was shocked that he would disrespect me in front of everybody because normally he would kind of hide his hand and hide behind the title of being a doctor, which makes him feel that because he has that title, he is a person of good character—and that’s not true. I was shocked that he did use profanity and yell and scream at me and disrespect me in front of everyone. Not only was I surprised at that, and that was for his image, I was surprised that he would disrespect Tea in front of me, and I’m his ex-wife. So there were a number of things there that I was just like, “Whoa, this is not cool on any level.” It’s not cool.
One of the things that I’ve been excited about seeing in terms of your new relationship is that you have been open about potential family planning, which is something in your previous marriage that you were against for all of the reasons that you just explained. What does that look like for you?
It looks like happiness to me. It looks like it’s now my time. We have, of course, talked about trying to do it naturally. We’ve given ourselves a time period, so if it doesn’t happen naturally, we’ve already consulted the reproductive doctor, and it’s onward and upward for us in terms of conceiving a child. And like I said before, I’ll say it again: as a parent, I think it is our responsibility to be able to evaluate the situation and say if this is a good environment for a child. And so if I was going to become a parent with my ex-husband, that was something that I had to take into consideration heavily.
I could not look at that lightly and say, “Well, just because he says that he wants a child and we’re married, I have to adhere to that.” I needed to be responsible and I needed to make the right decision for the future—not only my future but the future of that possible child. And when things were consistently happening, physical abuse and other abuses were going on, I decided it wasn’t a positive environment for a child. And so I did not proceed to want to conceive with him.
It is completely different with King. He is loving, he’s kind, he’s patient. He has a good emotional IQ. He doesn’t have any ego, hangups, or a lot of insecurities that Doctor G deals with. And so it just provides a better environment to foster a child in.
There’s been a lot of stuff happening in the Bravosphere in terms of shows being put on pause, shows being canceled, full recast situations happening. What would you attribute Married to Medicine’s success to in avoiding some of those same plagues?
We’ve tried new people, and I love to see some new people come in. I don’t want people to think that, “Oh, the girls on Married to Medicine, they don’t like new people.” Yes, we do welcome new people; however, it’s a method to this, and I think people need to not come in and try to connect themselves with any one individual, but really get an opportunity to meet everyone and make their own observations of each individual. I think our fans have been able to grow with us, and they’re very invested. They’re invested in what’s gonna happen next. They want to know if Quad is gonna get married. They want to know if Quad is pregnant right now. Apparently, I’m supposed to be, but I’m not. And so I think that one of the keys to our show’s success is that we have fans who are vested, and they really want to see what’s next for all of us.
