Ray Romano and Lisa Kudrow are finding the comedy in darkness with Netflix‘s new black comedy, No Good Deed.

Blavity/Shadow and Act writer Martie Bowser spoke with Romano and Kudrow for Blavity about the upcoming series and how the stars were able to balance their characters’ emotions.

“We’re dealing with a lot and you’re trying to keep it hidden from everybody. You have to play that you’re suffering but you don’t want to show you’re suffering,” Romano said. “So it was a line to walk, but it’s fun to do and eventually release all that anger in some scenes.”

“It was a good challenge, a really good challenge,” added Kudrow. “There are so many different tones with comedy. No matter how many times you’ve done a sitcom or a movie with comedy, the ones are different, so that’s always kind of the nerves when you’re starting something different.”

“The difference is we still wanted it to be real and no tip over into cartoon-land and that’s a tricky thing, to have characters who could be considered over the top and broad but you still believe that this person could exist,” said Romano.

When Lydia (Lisa Kudrow) and Paul (Ray Romano) decide to move on from their empty nest to forge a new life, they list their gorgeous 1920s Spanish-style villa located in one the most desirable neighborhoods in Los Angeles — and the real estate frenzy begins. Multiple families all race to buy what they believe to be their dream house, convinced it will fix all of their very different problems. But as Lydia and Paul know all too well, sometimes the home of your dreams can be a true nightmare. As they struggle to hide the dark and dangerous secrets that linger inside their longtime home, Paul and Lydia begin to realize that the only way they’ll escape the past is to finally face it.
