Another NCIS spinoff is on CBS, but this time, its a prequel–which has fans especially excited.
NCIS: Origins is set in 1991, years before the events of NCIS, and follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs.
“We are elated and honored to continue the expansion of the NCIS universe in such a unique and unexpected way,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, when the news was first announced. “Viewers can look forward to Mark Harmon returning to CBS to narrate the complex and mysterious backstory of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ early years in NCIS: Origins, which will build on the rich legacy of this character while reintroducing fan-favorite characters and meeting new ones.”
Who plays Gibbs in ‘NCIS: Origins’?
Austin Stowell is the actor who plays Gibbs in the new series. As CBS stated in a previous press release, in the series, “Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.” Prior to this role, Gibbs was in series like Three Women and Keep Breathing. He was also in the 2020 Fantasy Island movie, starred in the 2021 rom-com The Hating Game and more.

What is NCIS: Origins about?
According to an official synopsis:
NCIS: ORIGINS follows a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Stowell) in 1991, years prior to the events of NCIS, and is narrated by Mark Harmon. In the series, Gibbs starts his career as a newly minted special agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office, where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks (Schmid).
“The character of Gibbs has been an important part of my life for 20 years, both in watching my father craft the role and previously having the honor to play young Gibbs myself,” said executive producer Sean Harmon in a previous statement. “I always felt there was a tale worth telling about his earlier years, so I am thrilled to be stepping into a producing role alongside Gina, David and my dad as we tell this story and reveal a new side of this beloved character.”
Mariel Molino plays Lala Dominguez
Molino portrays Special Agent Lala Dominguez. She was previously the lead for Freeform’s The Watchful Eye and was also a series regular on ABC’s Promised Land.
Kyle Schimid plays Mike Franks
Schimd is Special Agent Mike Franks, the team’s leader. Mike Muse played the character in the original series. Schmid’s other roles include History’s Six, Syfy’s Being Human and Netflix’s The I-Land.
Tyla Abercrumbie plays Mary Jo Hayes
Abercrumbie portrays Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo Hayes. The actress is most known for their role on Showtime’s long-running series The Chi, where she played Nina Williams for six seasons.
Diany Rodriguez plays Vera Strickland
Rodriguez is Special Agent Vera Strickland. Roma Maffia played the character in the original series. Prior to being cast on NCIS: Origins, Rodriguez has recurring roles in Twisted Metal and The Blacklist. She also had a role in the recent Peacock series, Teacup.
Caleb Foote plays Bernard “Randy” Randolf
Foote portrays Randy Randolf, Special Agent Bernard “Randy” Randolf. He is most known for series regular roles in Max’s Made for Love and ABC’s The Kids are Alright.
