Keke Palmer, SZA and Issa Rae want viewers to reflect on who their ride-or-die friends are after watching their latest comedy, One of Them Days.
The film follows two friends doing everything they can to pay their rent by the end of the day. Whether they fail or succeed, they’re going through the turmoil together. Palmer told Blavity/Shadow and Act Managing Editor Trey Mangum that she hopes viewers think about who stands by them no matter what.
Keke Palmer on the power of community
“What I hope they take from it [is that] you go through things and you get through things with people. I think a lot of times in life it’s so hard, and you want to just deal with everything on your own, or you feel like you have to deal with things on your own. But honestly, you need community,” Palmer said. “You need a friend or a couple of friends to help you get through the other side. And no matter how difficult it may be, or how embarrassing it could be, two’s better than one.”
SZA on resilience and acceptance
SZA also shared that difficult moments don’t define permanence.
“It’s also never over… It’s just being down to, like, just keep—nothing is over,” she said. “Life is inherently chaotic and unfair, right? But it’s all about being able to move with acceptance and joyful possibility on what—where we could, like, how we can, you know, circumvent the energy to transmute the situation.”
Issa Rae reflects on real-life inspirations
Rae, who produces the picture, expressed gratitude for the supportive women in her life, including the film’s screenwriter, Rap Sh!t showrunner Syreeta Singleton.
“I love the way that she writes female friendships and Black women,” Rae said. “And for me, as I write and kind of project what I want to see, I think about constantly the people in my life. I mine from the relationships that I have… I try to mine the beauty, and I hope that other people appreciate it.”
