Just when you thought France dodged a major bullet by not electing Marine Le Pen as President, Emmanuel Macron says something incredibly racist about the entire continent of Africa.
The newly elected French president believes that the continent's political issues are "civilizational" and implies that external factors are not responsible. His controversial comments were made Saturday, July 9 when a reporter from the Ivory Coast asked why there was no Marshall Plan for Africa during the G20 summit.
"The Marshall Plan was a reconstruction plan […] The challenge of Africa is totally different and a lot more profound, it’s civilizational today,” said Macron, adding that “we need to develop policies that are a lot more sophisticated than the Marshall Plan.”
Macron has made headlines for being a symbol of liberalism in the age of Trump, but his statements are not reflective of his liberalism. He goes on to blame women for having “seven or eight children" as well.
The statements, as racist as they sound, are just plain ignorant of the role the French and other European nations played in destabilizing nations, stealing resources, colonizing and killing indigenous people to fill their nations' pockets.
