Dawn Richard is opening up about the real reason she left Danity Kane.

According to Complex, during a recent episode of the Cocoism podcast, Richard detailed how Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Dirty Money trio — comprised of Richard, Kalenna Harper, and the disgraced music mogul — came to be. She also described the coercion she says influenced her decision to leave Danity Kane, as well as how she was allegedly “iced out” of the girl group’s The Untold Chapter Tour.

Richard said Diddy ‘threatened’ her to leave Danity Kane to join Dirty Money

Close to 15 minutes into the episode, Richard discussed the genesis of Diddy Dirty Money and how rumors surrounding her departure from Danity Kane in favor of the trio impacted how the public views her online.

“People say, ‘Oh, you chose Dirty Money over Danity Kane,’ and it’s like, no, I was bought out of a contract, and I was told I couldn’t leave,” she said.

The singer explained that Diddy forced her to leave the group. She also revealed she kept his coercion under wraps.

“I was threatened, but I didn’t tell everybody that,” she said. “I just did what I had to do to get out of it, because I didn’t feel like that was everybody’s business.”

Richard ‘saddened’ by being ‘iced out’ of Danity Kane’s reunion tour

According to Hot 97, Richard also discussed Danity Kane’s reunion tour and alleges she was “iced out” from the girl group’s comeback.

“I don’t agree with the way I’ve been portrayed,” Richard told the Cocoism podcast. “If you know me…I would never hurt anyone, I would never talk ill of someone… I’m not that person.”

Richard claimed the “narrative being spun” about her isn’t true.

Later, when one of the Cocoism hosts pointed out Richard’s history with the group — i.e., her naming the group when they appeared on MTV’s Making the Band 3 — the singer expounded on being allegedly “iced out” from Danity Kane’s reunion.

“That’s a choice [they made], but I’m not going to go back and forth and be messy and call myself ‘the mother’ [of the group because I came up with the name]. I wish it could be all five of us.”

Richard said she was “saddened by the reality” and doesn’t think fans will ever see the group’s original five members reunite, as Aubrey O’Day, Aundrea Fimbres and D. Woods kicked off The Untold Chapter Tour earlier this month.

According to Danity Kane’s website, the group is performing at the Ace of Spades in Sacramento, California, on Monday.
