AFROTECH™ 2024 is now in the books, and so much knowledge was shared in Houston, TX, regarding tech advancement, innovation, and navigating your career. There was no real way you left the conference empty-handed and unprepared to dream big! AT&T was at the center of one of these conversations during ‘The Tech Playbook: Turning Passions into Profitable Careers,’ panel presented by AT&T Dream In Black.”

This panel at AFROTECH™ brought together media influencer Scottie Beam and Culture Con CEO Imani Ellis to discuss the intersection of creativity and technology, developing strategies for breaking barriers and turning dreams into reality. With a packed audience of professionals and aspiring tech leaders, the discussion delivered actionable insights on leveraging technology, building standout personal brands, and empowering underrepresented talent. It was also a testament to the power of connectivity and community, as attendees shared ideas, collaborated, and created networks that will extend beyond the conference.

From mastering cutting-edge tools to redefining authenticity, here are some highlights that capture the vibes and all the nuggets of wisdom from this transformative session.

Mastering Technology to Amplify Impact

Technology is an essential tool for turning dreams into reality. The panelists highlighted tools like Grammarly for polished communication, Cosmos for aesthetic inspiration, and ChatGPT for streamlining tasks. These resources help creatives maximize efficiency, save time, and focus on innovation.

It’s not about replacing creativity but supporting it with tools that expand possibilities. Leveraging these technologies allows underrepresented talent to amplify their work and make meaningful connections.

Equity, Inclusion, and the Power of Networks

Ellis and Beam both noted that AFROTECH™ is a special space where Black professionals can connect, feel seen, and access transformative opportunities. They emphasized that networking involves transactions, building trust, and creating mutual value. The presence of AT&T Dream In Black at AFROTECH™underscored the importance of fostering these connections by championing spaces where innovation and community intersect.

“Relationships can open the doors to your next big opportunity,” Ellis noted. By showing up authentically and sharing their stories, creatives can foster connections that lead to long-term success. AT&T Dream In Black’s work in empowering underrepresented talent serves as a reminder that technology doesn’t just drive innovation—it brings people together, creating a network of support and shared growth.

Overcoming Challenges: Integrity and Monetization

Balancing personal integrity with the demands of monetizing creative work can be challenging. Panelists shared their struggles with explaining the value of Black content and refusing to compromise on their missions. “Integrity isn’t for sale,” Beam emphasized.

For those navigating pricing and monetization, Ellis recommended a tiered model so that people know what is offered upfront and everyone at the table knows what is what.

  1. Freebie Tier: Offer entry-level access to attract leads.
  2. Standard Tier: Provide foundational services for a broader audience.
  3. Premium Tier: Deliver high-value services for exclusive clients.

Trailblazing Begins with Self-Awareness

Success starts with understanding your passions and purpose. Panelists encouraged attendees to reflect on their values and goals, emphasizing that clarity about what makes you unique is the first step in building a community or brand.

Ellis shared how her journey began with hosting intimate gatherings in her living room, which eventually evolved into a 10,000-person conference. The lesson? Start small, stay consistent, and scale as opportunities arise.

Building an Authentic Personal Brand

A standout personal brand is critical to turning passion into profit. The panelists stressed the importance of authenticity in attracting the right audience, and sometimes, that means gathering brand feedback from those who know you the best and leveraging that to move yourself forward. Another feedback tool Scottie Beam listed that she uses is engaging your audience through direct messages, surveys, and focus groups. Understanding their needs strengthens trust and refines your offerings.

“That’s how I started to use [feedback] for myself, and not necessarily adapt to what they want, but what about me makes them feel like I can fit in that lane,” Beam stated.

Daring to Dream Big

What is a panel without a call to action? The audience was challenged to walk it as they talk it: embrace discomfort, trust the process, and pursue their vision fearlessly. Whether stepping out of a stable job or launching a new venture, the panelists reminded attendees that opportunities arise when they’re willing to take risks.

“When the opportunity comes, don’t hesitate,” Ellis urged. “Even if you’re scared, it’s time to get ready and go for it.”
