It has been the joy of the pro-wrestling world to congratulate Naomi and Jimmy Uso on their pregnancy announcement. After some speculation, the former WWE Women’s World Champion announced on Monday Night Raw that she was indeed expecting. This announcement was met with vociferous cheers from the live audience. It was followed up by a couple of weeks’ worth of adulation and support for the couple, and for Naomi particularly. This moment was a reminder of how far the culture of women’s professional wrestling has come.
Pro-Wrestling’s checkered past
In generations past, women wrestlers always had a difficult time balancing their family and their career. Many times, just as in other industries, women had to sacrifice one for the other. We’re in an age now where there has been more advocacy for women as new parents. In pro-wrestling, the WWE has made it so that women don’t feel like they’d be penalized for starting a family. Their “spot” is safe, so to speak. It’s a breath of fresh air for talent and fans alike.
One of our own
Now, Black people are even more excited for Naomi because we understand the fertility journeys of many of our own. We understand the Black woman mortality rates in pregnancy and really appreciate having autonomy over our care. Knowing that Naomi had some difficulties conceiving and knowing she would have to consider other options to do so made this even more special.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention even reports that Black women are twice as likely to experience infertility as white women. So, to steal an apropos phrase, Naomi indeed has to proceed with caution for the rest of her journey. It’s heartwarming to know that she’ll be able to experience the joy of carrying a child. She gets to share this journey with her family and her husband. Even with the antagonistic persona she portrays on television, nothing could wipe the joy off her face.
The ‘bloodline’ continues
It’s such a beautiful thing to have a feel-good story in this climate, especially in a country that can cause a lot of hullabaloo. Hell, the WWE also helps perpetuate some of that, too. But their talent is another story—and it’s amazing to see them find further fulfillment in their lives beyond their livelihood.
To Naomi and Jimmy, may they experience such a healthy pregnancy. When the time is right, we’ll all be ready to throw the “1s” up one time for the baby Uso.
