Blac Chyna has created a new line of skin lightening creams in partnership with Nigerian cosmetics brand Whitenicious. The social media model and influencer announced the news on Instagram Tuesday:
A PR Newswire analysis found the global market for skin whitening products is expected to double in the next 10 years. With Chyna's new product going for $250, it would appear she's primed for good returns, especially given Nigerian women are one of the world's leading consumers of whitening products. According to The World Health Organization, 77 percent of Nigerian women use the creams.
WHO has found these creams can be dangerous however; they have been known to cause kidney diseases and even blindness. Whitenicious founder, African pop singer Dencia, defended her product on the UK's Channel 4, claiming it is safer than other skin whitening products because it lacks harmful chemicals such as mercury.
During her Channel 4 appearance, Dencia said, "White means pure," but argued the "white" in her cream's name refers to the hue, not to white skin. She maintained that although she appears in advertisements with digitally lightened skin, her product is only for people who want to remove blemishes.
Blac Chyna claims that is exactly what she uses Whitenicious for. A spokesperson for the mother of two told TMZ the product helps Chyna manage issues related to hyper-pigmentation.
Twitter, however, didn't seem to buy the explanation:
