Police issued an Amber Alert on Tuesday after the teen was reportedly abducted by four men in a tan car around 11:30 p.m. on Monday. Friends of her boyfriend operated as the "kidnappers," and she allegedly spent the night at her boyfriend's place. Nearby surveillance video captured her mother being pushed to the ground during the incident.
Witnesses said Sanchez's mother was visibly shaken after seeing her daughter driven away.
“She was just screaming ‘My daughter, my daughter, my God, someone please help me.’ She was screaming hysterically. And I was looking, wondering what was going on. She was just screaming in the street,” one witness said.
Sanchez was reunited with her mother on Tuesday around 2:30 p.m. CBS New York reports she suddenly showed up at the scene and turned herself in.
According to the New York Daily News, Sanchez and the four accomplices realized the magnitude of their stunt after the Amber Alert was issued.
“Once they realized what they did, with the Amber Alert on their phones, it was like, ‘Oh, s**t, we got a problem,’” a source told the outlet.
People in the neighborhood immediately recognized Sanchez as police walked with her toward a parking garage after she was found. A crowd gathered as she was reunited with her family just feet from where she had been reportedly kidnapped.
“She was shaken up. She was bending over, grabbing her knees, and discussing with the police. And that’s when they took her into the parking garage for questioning,” resident Zani Koxha said.
“We was at the pole over there, looking at her picture, and we walked up the block, she was crossing the street to the cop car, and I was like, ‘Yo, that’s her right there,'” another resident said.
Chief Rodney Harrison said she was found "safe and unharmed" while thanking the work of law enforcement.
